Camping Out at El Dorado Night

Next weekend (the weekend of 8/17), our club seeks to hold a family camping event at El Dorado Park.

We will hold this event at a nearby camping site within the park, right next to the archery range.

Whether it be just one or two nights depends on the number of participants.

This will be a great opportunity to not only spend time together as a family but also interact with other club members.

We can also walk right over to the archery range and shoot to our heart's content.

When we know the exact number of families attending, we can finalize our plans and make reservations for the camp site.

If you are interested and wish to attend, please call 213-479-1505 (Jin Woo's mom).

June Tournaments

First, I would like to congratulate all of you who competed at the Cotton Boll Classic in Tulare this past weekend.

Despite the hot weather and fierce competition, several of our members placed in cadet and cub divisions.

For the month of June, there are three tournaments.

1) Long Beach Qualifier - 6/10
Though this is not a formal tournament, this is a great way to build experience and practice.
It is no different than keeping score of your practice.
You can register at: http://www.thisisforscore.com/

2) California State Outdoor Championships - 6/16-6/17
This is third of the four state ranking tournaments of the year.
The location is El Dorado Park, our usual practicing range.
This tournament is rather large, as it is a state tournament.
You can register at:
http://calarchery.net/index.php?option=com_dtregister&controller=event&task=options&Itemid=17&eventId=4

3) Easton JOAD Nationals - 6/26-6/30
This is the major national competition of the year.
It is by far the largest tournament.
This tournament counts towards your national ranking.
You can register at and get more information at:
http://www2.teamusa.org/USA-Archery/Events/2012/June/26/National-Target-Championships-and-Easton-JOAD-Nationals.aspx

Preparing for these quickly approaching tournaments, we should practice just as we would shoot at competitions.

As numerous of our coaches have reminded us, how you shoot at competitions should not be any different than the way you practice.

They also have told us that "practice doesn't make perfect. PERFECT practice makes perfect."

Keeping those in mind, be sure to practice "perfectly", even if it's just stretch band.

We need strong foundations to keep focus throughout our shots.

Don't forget to keep hydrated in the rather hot weather!

Easton JOAD Nationals / National Target Championships / JOAD Camps

The registration is now open for Easton JOAD Nationals / National Target Championships, which is at the end of June.

It is one of the seven national tournaments that account for national ranking.

If you are planning to compete and have not yet arranged transportation/hotels, you should hurry before plane ticket prices soar and hotel spaces run out.

It is the largest national outdoor competition of the year.

Also, for those of you who want to experience intense training, JOAD Camp is a great opportunity for you.

For four days, you will have the chance to train under an Elite coaching staff and to assimilate the NTS.

If you are interested, visit the following link for more information:

Finally, just a reminder for this Saturday to bring equipment that you would like to sell.

We will hold an equipment exchange/buy/sell.

Be sure to practice, especially since Cotton Boll is just around the corner! (whether you are competing, keep practicing!)

And even when you practice, make sure you practice properly because as Coach Eric often tells us, "Practice doesn't make perfect. PERFECT practice makes perfect."

See you this Saturday!

First Outdoor Practice of the Year 2012

How was shooting outside today?

Aiming off to compensate for the wind, walking much further out to retrieve arrows, and searching for arrows that have just missed the target...the outdoor season has begun!

Today was our first day of practicing at El Dorado Park.

During our short break in the midst of our practice and in celebration of Jenna Ahn's birthday and Sean Chang's great performance at the Arizona Cup last weekend, we were able to enjoy delicious food and refreshing drinks, thanks to the parents who helped out in preparation (Thank you, parents!)

As the outdoor season progresses, with the upcoming national tournament (Gator Cup) in April and the first outdoor state tournament (Cotton Boll Classic) in May, we must continue to practice, not only by shooting our bow and arrows but also focusing on the foundations by working with stretch bands.

However, as the popular saying goes, "Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice make perfect."

No matter how much time one spends to practice, he will NOT improve unless he practices properly.

I wish everyone a productive week of effective practices.

-Jin Woo Kim

P.S. Pictures will be up soon, so be sure to check back!

We will start with our stretches and stretch band exercises from 4, so please have everything ready beforehand.

If possible, set up early and help with setting the archery range, such as putting up targets, moving target bales, etc, so that we can get to shooting quickly!

See you this Saturday!

Since there five weeks this month, we will be taking a one week break.

Our club practices will resume 03.31.2012, the Saturday after this week.

Although we won't be having a practice as a club, you should all be practicing in preparation for upcoming tournaments!

If you are interested in competing, make sure you quickly register and reserve a hotel, because hotel spaces are quite limited!

Important: Information for 02/11/2012 Scoring Round - 300 + Upcoming Tournaments

Dear Fellow Archers,

On 02/11/2012 (Saturday), we will be shooting a 30-arrow scoring round, giving us a score out of 300.

We will be shooting 10 ends of 3 arrows.

This scoring practice is in an effort to prepare for the upcoming U.S. National Indoor Championships at Tulare, CA, on 2/24/2012-2/26/2012.

In an actual tournament, scoring will be out of 1200 (120 arrows), which is split into 30 arrows + 30 arrows on the first day and 30 arrows + 30 arrows on the second day.

We will be shooting just one of the four 30-arrows.

In order to finish on time, we must be ready to proceed by 4pm.

That means, archers must already have set up their equipment and be ready to stretch by 4pm!

Please try to come before 4pm on 02/11/2012 and be ready to go at 4pm!

Are you all excited for the upcoming outdoors season??

Below are lists of competitions that count toward your state or national ranking.

State or national ranking can be achieved only by those who are members of USArchery (membership can be obtained here for a $35 fee: http://usarchery.org/membership).

For state, you must attend three of the four tournaments listed.

State indoor was in January, so those of you who missed it must attend all upcoming state competitions!

As for nationals, you must attend National Target Championships/Easton JOAD National Championships (two events combined into one) in order to obtain a national rank.

For both state and national ranking, the more tournaments you attend, your rank generally increases (not always!) because rankings are determined by averaging the ranks you placed in each tournament.

Thank you, Stephanie, for the list of competitions for 2012!

There are always more non-ranking related tournaments to compete in at  http://calarchery.net/index.php?option=com_jevents&view=year&task=year.listevents&Itemid=44  (state events) or http://usarchery.org/events (national events).

Thank you.
